“Roasted lugworms have more calories than Mars bars, weight for weight,” said Eva. “Much better for you too. We’re going to need human lugworm tasters when we get back to the lab. Get ready for a protein snack. I’m nominating you and your friend.”

“Ha ha,” said Froggy. “You’re joking. I bet that’s not even legal.”

“Ha ha,” said Eva. “Of course it is. And your parents all signed permission forms about foraging before you came.”

Then Eva and Froggy glared at one another, and I knew which one would win. I was right. Froggy turned away from the truck and reached out to take the lugworm spades, just as Eva had told him to do.

But Eva hadn’t finished with him. “We’re stopping early this afternoon,” she told Froggy. “We’ve decided to have a talent show spectacular tonight. Everybody on stage, no excuses, anything goes, fancy dress, fire eating – if you’re not too full after the lugworms. So what can you do? Sing?”

“Sing?” croaked Froggy.

“He can sing AND dance,” said his friend, overhearing. “He can do a whole ‘Circle of Life’ thing from The Lion King. I’ve seen him.”

“You saw me do it in Year TWO!” screeched Froggy. “I was six! I can’t do it now!”

But he was too late. Already Eva was saying, “Great. That’s the opening act sorted then.” She wrote it down on her clipboard. “Perfect!” she told Froggy. “And what about your friend?”

“I can juggle with bananas,” said Froggy’s friend smugly, and then lots of other people joined in with things that they could do. All really cheerful. Having a lovely time.
